A Brand-New Business With No Reviews: How Kauri Blinds Got Found on Google and in AI Answers

Kauri Blinds & Curtains started in 2026 with no name, no website and no reviews, up against a competitor with 1,300+. Its first real lead came about 8 days after its ads went live. Here's what worked, what didn't, and what it means for any new NZ business.

Short version

  • A new business can get its first enquiries in days with ads, but organic search takes months.
  • Publishing prices and answering 'how much does it cost' got Kauri cited in Google's AI answers.
  • 'Who should I use' answers come from reviews and directories, not from your blog.

Can a brand-new business get leads from Google?

Yes. A new business can get its first enquiries from Google Ads within days, because ads don't need history or reviews. Organic search and AI answers take longer, typically a few months. Kauri Blinds & Curtains, a new Auckland blinds company, had its first real lead about 8 days after its Google Ads went live in June 2026. Its price guides were ranking and being quoted in Google's AI answers about three months later.

This is the story of those first four months: what we set up, what worked, what didn't, and what we'd tell any owner launching a business in New Zealand today.

Where Kauri started: nothing at all

In May 2026, Kauri Blinds & Curtains didn't exist online. The owner, Alex, had the products, the know-how and a base on Auckland's North Shore. There was no website, no Google Business Profile, no reviews and no ads. Even the name came out of the first week's work.

The competition looked like this:

  • The best-known blinds company in Auckland has more than 1,300 Google reviews. Kauri had none.
  • Most competitors hid their prices. You phone, someone visits, and only then do you get a number.
  • Many were phone-only, with no way to book a measure online.

That last pair turned out to be the opening. When we looked at what Aucklanders actually type into Google, a big share of the searches were price questions: how much do blinds cost, roller blinds price per m², are motorised blinds worth it. Most competitors had no straight answer to any of them.

We run lead generation for NZ firms on our own AI engine: $1,500 setup + $500/mo (+ GST), month-to-month. Start with a Free Growth Audit: a written report on where you're losing enquiries, within 2 business days.

What we set up in the first month

Kauri runs on Growin Launch: a Google Ads campaign, a website made to turn visits into enquiries, and tracking on every enquiry. Our engine did the heavy lifting. It researched Auckland search demand and competitors, drafted the pages and set up the campaign. People made the calls. Alex approved prices and wording, and I approved every budget change.

In the first month that meant:

  1. A website with real prices on it. "From" prices on every product page, plus an area calculator, so a homeowner gets a ballpark before anyone visits. You can see them on kauriblinds.co.nz.
  2. A Google Business Profile with the right categories and services, and a weekly post that Alex approves before it goes out.
  3. A Google Ads campaign on tightly matched searches only: no broad keywords, a long negative-keyword list and a small daily budget.
  4. Tracking on every enquiry, whether it came from a form, a phone tap or an email. Each one records the exact ad or search behind it.

The first real lead came about 8 days after the ads went live: someone searching for electric blinds, landing on the motorised-blinds page.

Lesson 1: Answer the price question before anyone else does

The single best thing Kauri did for organic traffic was publish what things cost.

Since August, Kauri has published a cost guide for every product it sells: roller, Venetian, vertical, Roman, blackout, shutters, curtains. Each one opens with the answer in the first sentence, in NZ dollars, with a year on it. Each has a table and a short FAQ.

Two things happened:

  • The guides ranked first. The cost guides reached Google's first page while product pages for the same products were still on page three or four. People searching "how much" are close to buying, and a new site can win those searches because few competitors bother to answer them.
  • Google's AI answers started quoting them. On searches like "how much do roller blinds cost NZ", Google's AI Overview cites Kauri's guide. ChatGPT has also started sending visitors who go on to enquire.

AI answers lift text that is specific, current and easy to quote. "Roller blinds start from $55 per m² installed (2026)" can be quoted. "Contact us for a competitive price" can't.

In September, a sale traced back to the Roman blinds guide. A homeowner read the guide, booked a measure and bought.

Lesson 2: "Who should I use?" is a different game, and reviews win it

AI answers aren't all the same. Kauri gets quoted when people ask how much. It isn't named when people ask who's the best blinds company in Auckland.

Google and ChatGPT answer "who" questions from Google Maps listings, review counts and "top 10" directory articles, not from your blog. A competitor with 1,300 reviews gets named. A business with eight doesn't, however good its content.

For a new business, that means:

  • Ask every happy customer for a review, every time. That one habit does more for "who" questions than any page on your site.
  • Get into the directories and "best of" lists that AI answers draw on.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile active, with real services, real photos and regular posts.

Content earns you the "how much" questions. Reviews earn you the "who" questions. A new business needs both, and reviews take longest, so start asking on your first job.

Lesson 3: Count measures booked, not form fills

A form fill is not a customer. For a blinds company, the real chain is enquiry → measure booked → quote → sale, and Kauri tracks every step.

Alex records each sale against the original enquiry, and that result goes back into Google Ads and Meta overnight. So we can judge every search term and every channel on whether it produces measures and sales, not just form fills.

It changed decisions quickly. Some searches produced plenty of form fills that rarely became a booked measure, so we cut them. An outdoor campaign on Facebook got clicks but no enquiries, so we paused it after a few weeks rather than a few months. A cheap form fill that never becomes a measure booking isn't cheap.

If your current reports stop at "leads" or "conversions", you can't tell a channel that sells from one that just fills in forms.

Lesson 4: Real photos beat perfect photos

At launch, Kauri had no install photos, so we used supplier images and AI-generated room shots. One generated image showed the wrong type of blind. We caught it and replaced it, but it shows the limit: AI can stage a room, but it can't show your work.

The first photos of real Kauri installs went up in September. A homeowner deciding whether to let you into their house wants to see your work in a real Auckland room. Take a photo on every job.

Where AI fits, and where it doesn't

Kauri is a story about getting found, not about AI. AI is why it was fast and affordable for a small business:

  • Research of Auckland searches, prices and competitors took a day, not weeks.
  • Pages and guides were drafted by the engine and checked by a person before going live.
  • Daily audits of the Google Ads account catch wasted spend and broken tracking early.

The decisions stayed with people: what to charge, what to say, which customers to chase and how much to spend. Alex still measures every window himself.

What this means for your business

If you're launching, or you've been trading a while and your enquiries come mostly from word of mouth, here's the short version:

  1. Use ads for your first enquiries. Organic search takes months. Ads can start working in days if your tracking is right.
  2. Publish your prices and answer "how much" in plain NZ dollars. It is the fastest route into both Google and AI answers.
  3. Ask for a review on every job. It's the slowest asset to build, so start first.
  4. Track enquiries all the way to sales. Otherwise you're tuning for form fills.
  5. Show your real work. Photos from real jobs beat stock images.

Not sure where your enquiries are leaking? Our free Growth Audit is a written report on your website, your Google Business Profile and, if you run them, your Google Ads. It lands within 2 business days and it's yours to keep. If you want the numbers behind ad spend, start with what Google Ads costs in NZ or the $1,185 we spent on our own ads.

FAQ

How long does it take a new business to get leads from Google?

With Google Ads, days. Kauri Blinds had its first real lead about 8 days after launch. With organic search, expect several months. Kauri's price guides reached Google's first page roughly three months after the site launched.

Can a new business appear in Google's AI Overviews?

Yes, for questions your content answers directly. Specific, dated, NZ-dollar answers to "how much" questions are the easiest way in. "Who's the best" answers lean on reviews and directories, so they take longer.

Do I need reviews before I start advertising?

No. Ads work without reviews, but reviews make every ad and listing convert better. Start collecting them on your first job.

Should I publish my prices online?

For most trades and home-services businesses, yes. Show "from" prices and what changes the final quote. It answers the question people actually search for, and your enquiries arrive already expecting your range.

What does Growin Launch cost?

$1,500 setup + $500/mo (+ GST), flat for ad budgets up to $5,000/mo, month-to-month. You own your ad account and data.
